Extraction Specialist

LOCATION: This position is located in Newport, KY, two blocks from Newport on the Levee

HOURS: Monday through Friday, 6:30 AM – 3:00 PM

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Extraction Specialist is responsible for sample accessioning, sample preparation and sample extraction using automated solid phase extraction and manual extraction methods for urine, and oral fluid specimens.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Toxicology, Biochemistry, Biology, Forensic Science, or a similar analytical science field
    • Or Associate of Science in Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) with appropriate national certification and three years of experience.
  • Preference for candidates with familiarity with pipetting, extractions, and use of well plates.
  • Previous work with bodily fluids, such as urine, blood, or oral fluid preferred.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Accession samples into the Laboratory Information System (LIS)
  • Prepare urine and oral fluid specimens for extraction using established standard operating procedures (SOPs)
  • Prepare calibrators and quality controls for extractions
  • Ensure the integrity of the specimen by confirming identifying information on the specimen container matches identifying information on the paperwork
  • Accurately aliquot specimens and controls into labeled 96-well plates and test tubes using single-channel, multi-channel, and variable-volume pipettes or use instrumentation
  • Use the LIS to track specimens
  • Document steps performed in the process to track completion times, temperatures, and instruments used per CLIA and CAP regulations
  • Prepare solutions for manual and automated solid phase extraction – requires candidate to perform calculations related to basic chemistry and properly calibrate and use a pH meter when needed
  • Perform required weekly maintenance on instruments and analyzers, including automated liquid handlers
  • Troubleshoot issues with instruments and analyzers
  • Perform automated solid phase extractions on urine and oral fluid specimens
  • Perform manual extractions on oral fluid specimens
  • Dry well plates and test tubes in a concentration evaporator
  • Learn the purpose of each step in the sample extraction process
  • Learn the basics of processing calibrators, quality controls, and specimens on the enzyme immunoassay (EIA)
  • Document new and opened reagents, calibrators, and quality controls for the EIA
  • Perform required daily and weekly maintenance on the EIA and automated liquid handlers
  • Dispose of urine specimens that have reached their retention date
  • Document room temperature and humidity levels
  • Document reagents and controls per CLIA and CAP regulations
  • Restock inventory
  • Receive and put away incoming supplies
  • Complete general lab tasks as needed
  • Other duties as assigned

  • Ability to listen, learn, and promote accountability and responsibility related to all sample preparation and extraction processes
  • Proficient in use of single-channel and multi-channel pipettes
  • Proficient in ability to operate laboratory instrumentation and computers with scientific software applications
  • Must be able and willing to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) when required
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office applications
